Driving rain is not just background weather
If a roof leaks only when rain is being blown from one direction, I would start on that side of the building. A verge, chimney side, roof-to-wall joint or lifted slate can pass water in wind and stay dry during an ordinary shower.
That is much more useful than saying “it leaks sometimes”. If you know the wind direction, tell the roofer before they go up.
Older stone property brings the chimney and wall into the picture
On a stone house, damp near a chimney breast can come from the roof covering, the lead, the mortar in the stack or water getting into the masonry higher up. You need the whole junction looked at.
I would want photographs of the rear chimney gutter, the side lead and the upper masonry. Repointing the front of the stack because it is easiest to see is not enough.
Slate failures can be fixing failures
Natural slate lasts a long time. The nail holding it does not always last as long. If a sound-looking slate has slipped, the fixing may simply have corroded away.
If the same thing is happening across the slope, ask whether the old fixings are failing more generally. That is a different conversation from replacing one broken slate.
Watch the bottom of the roof after fascia or gutter work
New roofline work can expose a weakness in old felt. If the underlay finishes behind the fascia rather than over the gutter, water running beneath the roof covering can end up on the timber or wall.
When somebody opens the bottom course, ask them to photograph the felt, batten ends and rafter ends before new boards hide them.
What makes a useful quote here?
The quote should say what is being repaired and how the roofer will reach it. A single slate on a steep exposed roof may be a tiny repair once access is in place. The scaffold or roof access can be the larger part of the price.
If the proposal is to coat or seal a large area, ask what exact opening the coating is supposed to close. A proper explanation should make sense when you look at the photographs.
